Louisiana's Second-Largest Lake
Located in southeastern Louisiana is the state's second-largest lake, Lake Maurepas. It is just west of Lake Pontchartrain and sits in between New Orleans and Baton Rouge.
Lake Maurepas is made of brackish water and encompasses over 15,000 acres in size. The lake receives freshwater input through four river systems: Blind River, Amite River, Tickfaw River, and the Natalbany River. This lake is connected to the larger Lake Pontchartrain by a small channel.
Many Recreational Opportunities
Fishing, swimming, and boating have long been a favorite on Lake Maurepas. The lake's large size makes it the perfect place for water sports, and the brackish waters make for an exciting fishing spot.
Fish for largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, crappie, catfish, and striped bass on Lake Maurepas. You can launch your boat from the town of Maurepas onto the river feeding the lake. The Maurepas Swamp Wildlife Management Area is another nearby fishing spot for catching sunfish, crappie, and largemouth bass.
Family fun can be found by enjoying the lake's golf course, marinas, and campgrounds.
Lake Maurepas has two main campgrounds, Gryphon's Nest Campground and Lizard Creek Campground, as well as Belle Terre Golf Course.
Enjoy Lake Pontchartrain Too
If you leave Lake Maurepas and enter Lake Pontchartrain, you can enjoy all its amenities. The lake is open to swimming, fishing, boating, and other recreation. It is the perfect place to observe marine life and birds and catch various fish due to its shallow waters. You can even sight dolphins, sharks, and other unique ocean life at times.
